School Board Basics:
What Does a School Board Do?
The seven-member Eula ISD Board of Trustees is our district's policy-making body. While it is made up of individuals, it acts officially only as a group. The EISD School Board sets the direction of the school district, with the education and well-being of school children as its primary focus. Our school board not only represents the public, but also translates the needs of students into policies, plans and goals that will be supported by the community.
Responsibilities include:
- Hire and evaluate the Superintendent
- Approve the school district's budget
- Establish goals and evaulate outcomes
- Adopt and evaluate policies
- Levy and collect taxes and issue bonds
- Order elections, canvass returns, declare results and issue certificates of election as required by law
- Communicate with the community
Who serves on the School Board?
Each board member is elected by voters residing within the EISD boundaries for a four-year term to serve without pay. An individual board member's major responsibility is to study, evaluate, and after due consideration, vote in the best interest of all students. Members serve staggered terms so that all terms do not expire at the same time.
As mandated by House Bill 72 (1984) and by the State Board of Education, school board members are required to participate each year in training activities accredited by the Texas Education Agency. These accredited courses build the skills and knowledge necessary for each school board member to ensure a quality education for the children of our district. In addition to training, members study background materials on school finance, curriculum, and state law.
